2023 Year In Review

By: Amanda Guarragi

2023 was a year filled with incredible films. Blockbusters did not reign supreme this year, and unique films made audiences return to the theatre. We also had epic dramas, heart-wrenching romantic dramas and some light-hearted films. The movies released this year have shown that the tide is shifting for the general audience, and they expect something different that will surprise them. That will make them think and invite conversations. Here are my favourite films of the year and some honourable mentions.

TOP 10 MOVIES OF 2023

1. Oppenheimer

“Nolan creates layers of tension through two lenses; the objective and the subjective. He explores the difference in ideology between scientists and politicians, which is still relevant today. Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. are both brilliant in this.”

Oppenheimer review excerpt

2. The Iron Claw

“Efron’s performance is the driving force of this film. He was incredibly vulnerable even though he had to appear the strongest out of all of them. Apart from transforming his body, he had to develop a stone-cold exterior while struggling with his broken self on the inside.”

The Iron Claw review excerpt

3. Priscilla

“Coppola structured this as a coming-of-age film and destroyed the fantasy of being in a relationship with a superstar and an older man. It explores how infatuation at a young age can destroy one’s innocence. Its dreamlike fantasy of meeting a superstar is completely shattered.”

Priscilla review excerpt

4. The Holdovers

“David Hemingson’s script is one of the best this year as he interweaves the lives of these characters to reveal the central theme of grief. They begin to see similarities, which unify them by the end. Payne’s direction is tender and focused on the self-reflective journey of his characters.”

The Holdovers review excerpt

5. Anatomy of a Fall

“Justine Triet expertly explores a woman on trial for allegedly killing her husband after he falls from the balcony. Instead of a closed courtroom drama, Triet intricately highlights the evidence for the audience to become the judge by the end of this film. One of the best procedurals to date.”

6. Poor Things

“Stone gives the performance of her career in her most physical role to date. On the surface, like many Lanthimos films, it may be too absurd for people unfamiliar with his work. But the discussions about class, feminism, agency, and how the patriarchy destroys the evolution of the world are all well-written and executed for audiences to connect with the characters.”

Poor Things review excerpt

7. Poor Things

“Celine song captures the beauty and heartbreak of what loving someone entails. A journey through one’s past self and how your decisions can impact your future. Great Lee, Teo Yoo and John Magaro are a magical trio.”

Past Lives review excerpt

8. Maestro

“Cooper’s direction in this film is precise and experimental, and each frame is filled with care. Bernstein was a man with duality, two souls working against each other, two different people trying to live a full life.”

Maestro review excerpt

9. Killers of the Flower Moon

“As a seasoned storyteller, Scorsese delivers a raw perspective into the life of the Osage. He expertly weaves the history of the Osage at the peak of their success with the dehumanization and destruction of what they’ve built.”

Killers of the Flower Moon review excerpt

10. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One

“From back-to-back car chases to jumping off a cliff with a motorcycle to climbing up a falling train, everything looks realistic and gives the viewer the adrenaline kick with Hunt. This is one of the best action films of the year.”

Honourable Mentions

Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret

Abby Ryder Forston gives an endearing and heartfelt performance as Margaret and brings this character to life. Blume shows that there is no right way to be a woman. And you’re never behind. You’re simply growing at your own pace. Fremon Craig explores the fast-tracked societal pressures of becoming a woman, only for that moment to be terrifying because of what’s to come.

Air

There is no doubting Ben Affleck’s directorial abilities because he knows how to craft a compelling narrative while pulling powerful performances from his actors. Not only did he authentically capture the essence of the 80s within the opening montage of all the great athletes and name brands from the decade, but he kept those references throughout.

All Of Us Strangers

Adam opens the door to Harry, which symbolizes opening his heart to someone, but he doesn’t know how to balance the pain of his past and his newfound love. Mescal takes your breath away in this film, and Scott’s shyness compliments Mescal’s confidence. Their chemistry is natural and so loving. Once Adam realizes that he needs to let go of his past and work through his grief more realistically, he notices that he doesn’t know Harry at all and they are strangers.

All Of Us Strangers review excerpt

The films listed all have a special place in my heart and have made an impact this year. Thank you all for your support over the years and for reading my work this year. Happy New Year! Here’s to another great year of films in 2024!
